A Winter Fire

2 oz Rittenhouse Rye
.25 oz Rosemary simple syrup*
1 bar spoon of Cranberry and Citrus compote*
2 dashes whiskey barrel aged bitters

I am pretty devoted to the idea that rye whiskey makes for some of the best cocktails. Rye has some spicy floral note and enough finesse to blend well with other spirits and flavors. At the Barn we are devoted to passing on the tradition of classic American cocktails and America’s first whiskey. This cocktail has Rye as the base and uses winter flavors to round out the drink. Rosemary and cranberry are both perfect winter season ingredients which will also add herbaceous quality and tartness to the drink. A Winter Fire is perfect to enjoy cozied up next to the fire on cold winter nights with someone special.

*To make the Cranberry and Citrus compote add one bag of fresh cranberries, ½ cup of demerara sugar, half an orange and ½ cup water to a pot. Turn on medium heat and allow the ingredients to stew then deglaze the pan with just 1oz of rye whiskey. To make the rosemary simple syrup, take about 6 sprigs of fresh rosemary, equal parts white sugar and hot water and let the ingredients simmer until infused. You can remove the rosemary after so that the syrup doesn’t become overly herbaceous.
