Blackberry Farm Mulled Wine

1 bottle of Dry Red Wine (Preferably Cotes du Rhone)
3 Cinnamon Sticks
3 Star Anise Pods
1 Orange Sliced into Circles
1 Cup of Sugar
3oz of Brandy (Preferably Armagnac)

To begin, take the orange slices and dredge them in the sugar and set aside. Put a medium sized pot over medium to high heat and wait until the pot is hot. Add the dredged orange slices and let them caramelize, flipping them once one side is browned. Once both sides are caramelized, deglaze the pot with the 3oz of brandy. Next, add the red wine, cinnamon and star anise and let the mixture heat up over low heat. While the wine is heating up, taking the remaining sugar and make a simple syrup with it (2:1 ratio of water to sugar). Once the wine starts to gently steam, add the simple syrup to the pot. Let warm for 20 minutes and then serve. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, star anise pod and thinly sliced orange.
