Spring Thoughts

Although Spring is still a number of weeks away, the warm days that we have been having make us think that it is here now. Down at the garden shed we are busy seeding trays with vegetable varieties for early spring planting.

Our seeded trays so far consist of several varieties of kale, cabbage, broccoli, Chinese cabbage, chives, and several other varieties.

In our hoop houses, the beds are alive with the greens of early Spring. Lettuce, aragula, mixed greens, chives, onions, and radishes are all beginning to spring to life. Out in the fields, the long rows of early plantings are also beginning to break soils surface. In just a few days we will begin seeding pots, cell packs and trays for tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. I love to see the first tomato and pepper plant seedlings as they push their way above the seed starter medium.

Once the first seedlings appear, I know that the new farming season is underway. For me the excitement of a new farming season is always a time for joy and wonder.
