PERENNIALS

We grow a variety of perennial produce crops in the Garden, including apple trees, fig trees, blueberry bushes and black raspberry vines, sunchokes, sorrel and lemon balm. These crops yield delicious produce for our kitchens, often becoming a featured ingredient in seasonal dishes. Since we are committed to using or preserving produce at its peak, you will also find some of our perennial crops featured in delicious jams and preserves from our Larder, such as our Reserve Blueberry Jam. In addition to produce, you will also see an array of perennial flowers such as ironweed and Baptisa growing in the Garden. These beautiful flowers are incorporated in fresh and dried arrangements crafted by our Floral team. As you stroll through the property, take time to enjoy the artful arrangements you see along your way.

Perennial crops return and flourish year after year and are vital to our Garden’s biodiversity. Our Garden team strategically plants perennials in different sections of the Garden, taking into consideration each plant’s needs, like sun exposure or soil moisture, as well as the benefits each plant can provide to the rest of the Garden. Some of our perennials are planted in rows with annual vegetables. They stay there year after year providing stability to the microbiome of the soil. Additionally, some perennials protect our shade-loving plants from the sun.

Jams, Pickles and Preserves

Blackberry’s small-batch preserves pay homage to the true meaning of abundance with stewardship and respect for the orchard’s natural goodness. through recipes passed down by our Appalachian forebears, our artisans revive the craft of "putting by" with each jar that’s sealed. using only the highest quality ingredients.
