  • Geocaching: Letterboxing

During the 1850s in Dartmoor, County Devon, a secretive tradition began between travelers hiking the English moors. These wanderers would leave postcards in hidden boxes along the trails. The next to discover the cache would then post the letters, hence the name “Letterboxing”. At Blackberry Farm, we have hidden eight Letterboxes for guests to find. In your kit, you have a GPS, a compass, a set of postcards, property map and pen. The locations of our Letterboxes are recorded in the GPS, which you will use to search for these hidden treasures.

    • 1-1.5 hours

    • This can be booked as a guided or self-guided activity.

    • Ages six and up, minors must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Geocaching: Tree Treasures

The Tree Treasures version of Geocaching provides a fun, family-friendly activity that will give everyone a closer look at the trees that make up our forest, while enjoying the hunt for our collection of caches. You will get to explore the canopy of southern Appalachia from below as you trek through the forest on Blackberry’s own Walker Mountain trail. This course is designed to enrich the minds of our guests by prompting them to interact with the forest, and learn about the habitat of our native trees. With a GPS in hand, follow the coordinates and find hidden doors at the base of eight trees along the trail. Each door is marked with a letter, which will be unscrambled to solve a riddle at the end. To prompt guests to look up in the canopy, we have also placed dry bags that the guests will lower from the tree tops and collect what lies inside.

    • 1.5 hours

    • Activity is booked with a guide. Moderate difficulty as it includes a one-mile hike.
